Behind the Scenes of the Disneyland of Dairy Stores
with The New York Times

Last year, The New York Times shadowed Yonkers Seafood Manager Amy O’Rourke for an “On the Job” video segment.  From filleting fish to selling lobster rolls in a – you guessed it –  lobster suit, Amy is the definition of service with a smile.

Stew Leonard’s…by the numbers!

  • Stew Leonard’s opened in 1969 as a 17,000-square-foot dairy store with just seven employees and carrying just 8 items
  • Stew’s welcomes more than 10 million customers every year to our eight grocery stores
  • 26% of our Team Members have a family member working at Stew’s and more than 60 of our current Team Members met their spouse while working at Stew’s
  • More than 80% of our managers are promoted from within
  • Stew Leonard’s has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships to high school student Team Members
  • Every year, Stew Leonard’s sells more than 3 million bagels, 2.5 million chocolate chip cookies, 2.5 million half-gallons of milk, 2 million pounds of bananas, 2 million units of organic produce items, 1.5 million pounds of lobster, 1.5 million pounds of filet mignon, 1 million avocados, 1 million pounds of apples, 1 million pounds of potatoes, 300,000 pounds of fresh mozzarella, 250,000 pumpkins, and 70,000 Christmas trees and wreaths! Plus, ur chefs serve more than 100,000 meals to our customers every week.
  • Every time a customer spends $100 or more using their Stew Leonard’s app, they can redeem their app points to receive a free ice cream cone or small cup of coffee.
  • Unlike traditional grocery stores that sell an average 45,000 items, each Stew Leonard’s store carries only 2,500 items, chosen specifically for their freshness, quality and value.
  • 80% of the products sold in-store are fresh – that is, brought in daily or prepared directly in-store
  • Since 1979, Stew Leonard’s has donated more than 70,000 turkeys to local churches, senior centers, and civic centers through our annual Turkey Brigade to help provide Thanksgiving Day meals for families in need

Stew's In Our Community

Our Team Members love being out and about in the community, from donating time and money to local schools to partnering with Mayor Spano to help clean up public spaces throughout the City of Yonkers and donating thousands of turkeys to families in need every Thanksgiving.
