How to Make Your Jack-O’-Lantern Last Longer

There is nothing more disappointing than carving the perfect pumpkin only to see it collapse before Halloween night. Here are a few clever tricks straight from Stew Leonard's Garden Center experts that will keep your jack o' lantern looking fresh and festive through Halloween.

Trick #1: Start with the Right Pumpkin

A long-lasting jack-o’-lantern starts at the pumpkin patch. Pick one that feels firm all over, has a sturdy stem, and no soft spots. The fresher the pumpkin, the longer your design will shine.

Choose the Best Pumpkin!

Trick #2: Petroleum Jelly Rub

Rub a generous amount of petroleum jelly on the inside of your pumpkin and along the cut edges. This locks in moisture and slows down the drying process.

Bonus: It gives the carved edges a polished, finished look!

Trick #3: Lemon Juice & Water Spray

Mix equal parts lemon juice and water in a spray bottle. Spritz both the inside and outside of your pumpkin after carving. The acidity helps preserve the pumpkin and hardens the skin against wind, rain, and chilly nights.

Trick #4: Vegetable Oil Seal

Brush or rub vegetable oil over the entire surface of your pumpkin. This creates a protective barrier that slows down oxygen exposure. Less oxygen = less shriveling, so your jack-o’-lantern keeps its shape.

Trick #5: Skip the Candle

Real flames can speed up shriveling. Try a flameless LED candle or glow stick instead. You'll get the same spooky effect without the heat!

Keep Your Carved Pumpkin Glowing All Season

With the right pumpkin and a little TLC, your jack-o’-lantern can last well beyond Halloween night. Stop by Stew Leonard's Pumpkin Patch to pick up a fresh, locally grown pumpkin, and try these tricks at home.

You'll be amazed at how long your masterpiece lasts!
