How to Seed Your Lawn (And Choose the Right Grass Seed)

A thicker, healthier lawn starts with the right seed and the right process.

Whether you're filling in bare spots or starting fresh, seeding your lawn the right way makes all the difference. Here’s how to choose the best grass seed and get it growing successfully.

How to Choose the Right Grass Seed

Not all grass seed is the same. The best choice depends on how you want your lawn to look and how your yard performs throughout the day.

Consider:

  • Sun vs. shade – Does your lawn get full sun, partial sun, or mostly shade?
  • Foot traffic – Will your lawn be used heavily by kids or pets?
  • Appearance – Do you want a fine, manicured look or something more durable?

What to look for on the label:

  • Aim for a germination rate of 80–90% for best results
  • Higher-quality seed typically produces thicker, more consistent growth
  • Lower-cost seed may contain fillers or have lower germination rates

How to Seed Your Lawn (Step-by-Step)

Seeding your lawn isn’t complicated, but following the right steps will give you the best results.

1. Prepare the Soil

Start by loosening the top layer of soil:

  • Use a rake or tiller to break up compacted ground
  • Remove debris like rocks, sticks, and dead grass

This helps the seed make direct contact with the soil.

2. Add Nutrients

Before planting, improve your soil:

  • Apply a starter fertilizer
  • Add compost, peat moss, or dehydrated manure
  • Rake everything into the soil evenly

Then:

  • Level the surface
  • Lightly tamp the soil down

3. Spread the Seed

  • Apply your grass seed evenly across the area
  • Use a spreader for larger spaces

After spreading:

  • Lightly rake the area to cover the seed with a thin layer of soil

4. Protect the Seed

Add a protective layer to help retain moisture and prevent runoff:

  • Use a pre-chopped hay or straw substitute
  • This is preferred over traditional hay because it’s treated to remove weeds and mold spores
  • It’s also organic and will naturally decompose in about 3–4 weeks

5. Water Consistently

Watering is critical for successful germination:

  • Use a fine mist to avoid washing seeds away
  • Keep soil evenly moist, not soaked
  • Water daily until seeds sprout
  • Continue watering for about two weeks after germination

6. Let It Grow

  • Once grass reaches about 2 inches high, remove any remaining straw covering
  • Avoid heavy foot traffic during early growth

Before you know it, you’ll have new grass coming in.

Seeding your lawn is one of the most effective ways to improve its appearance and health. With the right seed, proper preparation, and consistent watering, you’ll set your lawn up for long-term success.
